Lael Brainard (born January 1, ) is an American economist. Brainard is the 14th Director of the National Economic Council since She was the Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve from to She was on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors from to She was the United States Under Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs from to She is a member of the Democratic Party.

Brainard was nominated by Barack Obama to serve as the undersecretary of international affairs at the Department of the Treasury on March 23, [1] She was sworn in on the same day on April 20, [2] She resigned on November 8, [3]

Brainard was nominated to the Fed board on January 13, , alongside Stanley Fischer and Jerome Powell. She was confirmed by a vote in the U.S. Senate on June 12, [4]

President Joe Biden nominated Brainard to be the Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve on November 22, [5] On April 26, , her nomination as Federal Reserve Vice Chair was confirmed by the U.S. Senate.[6]

In February , Biden announced Brainard as his Director of the National Economic Council.[7]
